Mimic is an audiovisual composition where the characters’ movements and sounds are described algorithmically, then simulated in real-time using Unreal Engine and Ableton Live. It is a family portrait influenced by my sister who counts and repeats actions (in 3’s), and by former personal superstitions about numbers. I copied her: finding the best fit for words on my fingers, adding license plate numbers, and, eventually, programming. These number games are now algorithms.
I’m portraying this relationship through this hand/number game simulation:
I’m arranging numbers I found while playing a numbers game at home in 2014. In the simulation, one sister is these numbers, and the other is the natural order of numbers (1,2,3,…) answering the riddle through copying her. They are also generating the sound in real-time through Ableton, and controlling the rhythm.
Nothing is random in the programming of this composition except for the blinking and eye movements.
